The Best Game Publishers of 2025: Metacritic Crowns Square Enix, Unexpected Winner at #1
Metacritic, the definitive platform for game reviews and Metascore calculations since 2001, has announced its 16th annual ranking of the best publishers from the past year. For the 2025 ranking, 28 companies qualified by releasing at least five titles. The evaluation is based on a point system that considers the average Metascore of their games, as well as the number of outstanding, good, and poorly rated releases.
This year's Top 5 presents several surprises, particularly at the forefront. A notable unexpected climber is Gamirror Games (formerly Gamera Games), a Chinese publisher, securing second place with 322.4 points—a significant leap from their sixth position last year. Gamirror Games contributed to titles such as the highly-rated "Absolum" (Metascore 87).
Claiming the top spot and the title of Best Publisher of 2025 is Square Enix. The Japanese company increased its average Metascore by five points to a total of 330.5, driven by successes like the PC version of "Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth" (Metascore 90). Remarkably, Square Enix had no poorly reviewed releases last year, though it's worth noting that a large portion of their lineup consisted of ports and remasters.
Capcom completes the podium in third place, narrowly missing second. With a strong outlook for 2026 thanks to titles like "Resident Evil Requiem" and "Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection," the Japanese publisher certainly has reason to be pleased with this result.
Sony Significantly Drops
Among console manufacturers, the landscape is varied: Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios reached fifth place, while Nintendo landed at twelfth. Sony experienced a significant setback, dropping to 21st place from their top position in 2023. While "Ghost of Yōtei" and "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" were well-received, "Lost Soul Aside" and "Midnight Murder Club" considerably dragged down their overall average score.
