HBO's Harry Potter Series Trailer Reveals a "Mild Carbon Copy"
We live in an era where intellectual property reigns supreme. Nowadays, if a franchise has enjoyed even the slightest popularity, it's almost certainly undergoing a reboot, revival, reinvention, or the creation of some kind of sequel. Harry Potter, one of the most beloved sagas globally —or at least it was before its author adopted stances that would directly clash with the principles of the heroes in her own literary universe— is no exception.
However, the controversial personal opinions of "She Who Must Not Be Named" are not enough to halt this colossal revenue machine. This means that, whether we want it or not, HBO will deliver a full television adaptation of the Harry Potter novels. And this happens merely 15 years after the final installment of a successful eight-film cinematic saga bid farewell to the big screen.
The HBO series, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to officially launch this Christmas. Everything about this production seems designed to avoid any disruption or risk. (Although, by opting for this title, the series will face the peculiarity of changing its name each season, which seems like an unnecessary complication). Yes, it's a project virtually nobody requested, and furthermore, it doesn't appear to be making even the essential innovations expected from a reboot or a modern adaptation.
Judging by the initial preview, this version of Harry Potter shows no interest whatsoever in questioning or re-evaluating the narrative of "The Boy Who Lived" and his world, as presented in the previous novels and films. It comes across more as an almost identical reproduction of what has already been seen, a mere "carbon copy" of what already exists. The only notable difference is the absence of John Williams' magical and uplifting score, which once managed to enhance even the most implausible moments of the original material.
