The announcement of Damon and Baby, a new project from Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari, surprised many fans during last year's Arc System Works Showcase. Contrary to expectations, it isn't a fighting game like Guilty Gear, but rather a top-down action RPG.
In an interview with the Korean portal GameMeca, Ishiwatari explained that this project represents Arc System Works' initial step towards developing smaller-scale titles while maintaining high quality standards. The ambitious goal is to create an original action RPG capable of carving out its niche in the indie scene and, in the author's own words, 'to rival Castlevania'—understood more in terms of cultural impact than as a simple model to imitate.
Development Process
Damon and Baby underwent an iterative development process. Initially conceived as a side-scrolling shooter, it later evolved into a twin-stick shooter with a strong action RPG component, combining firearm combat with a world filled with demons and monsters. This direction reflects the team's desire not to 'simply copy and paste existing elements' but to create something uniquely their own.
Alongside its creative ambition, there is also a precise internal strategy: Damon and Baby was created to offer young Arc System Works developers the opportunity to engage with different genres and acquire comprehensive experience in full-cycle game development, from beginning to end.
Ishiwatari also highlighted the challenges of producing an 'indie-style' title within a larger corporate structure. Costs and personnel inevitably tend to increase, making it more complex to maintain the competitive pricing typical of independent productions. To address this, the team adopted a leaner development cycle, reducing the time dedicated to documentation and specifications to focus more on gameplay, exploration, and action-puzzle elements. The game will still offer a significant challenge: Ishiwatari promises that boss battles will be intense and inspired by 'bullet hell' shooters.
Damon and Baby is expected to release on March 26 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
