While the 2017 game Yooka-Laylee received a mixed reception, it nonetheless cultivated a dedicated fanbase among enthusiasts of 3D platformers, who were charmed by its gameplay reminiscent of Banjo-Kazooie. This was largely due to developer Playtonic comprising many former Rare employees. The series continued its journey with the well-received 2D side-scrolling spin-off, Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair. Now, Playtonic is set to revive the original Yooka-Laylee with an enhanced remaster titled Yooka-Re-Playlee, slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC in the near future. Although a precise release date has yet to be announced, physical preorders for the game are already available for $50.
Yooka-Re-Playlee represents a comprehensive reimagining of the original title. It boasts improved graphics and animations, introduces new and re-envisioned in-game challenges, and offers an abundance of new unlockable content. Playtonic has also incorporated player-friendly tools, such as a map system, to aid navigation through its expansive 3D world and help track completed objectives. Moreover, the remaster will feature a reorchestrated soundtrack, crafted by legendary composers Grant Kirkhope (known for Banjo-Kazooie, Mario+Rabbids, Viva Piñata), David Wise (Donkey Kong Country), and Steve Burke (Viva Piñata).
If you`re seeking other engaging 3D platformers to enjoy while awaiting the arrival of Yooka-Re-Playlee, Kirby and the Forgotten Land comes highly recommended. Not only did the base game receive stellar reviews, but its Star-Crossed World expansion is scheduled to launch for Switch 2 on August 28, promising a wealth of new content. Donkey Kong Bananza, released earlier this year on Switch 2, is another excellent choice; its destructible environments and vibrant characters swiftly propelled it into Game of the Year discussions. Additionally, numerous other fantastic 3D platformers are available, including Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser`s Fury. On the PS5, Astro Bot is a standout title, featuring characters from classic PlayStation games, making it both an exceptional platformer and a nostalgic trip through PlayStation`s rich history.
