Dedicated Xbox users have recently witnessed several previously exclusive titles migrate to PlayStation 5, concurrent with Microsoft`s price increases for Game Pass subscriptions and Xbox consoles in the US. Laura Fryer, an original member of the Xbox team, has now publicly criticized her former employer, labeling these price hikes as a “betrayal” of the trust gamers had placed in the brand.
In her recent YouTube video, Fryer stated, “With this latest Game Pass price increase, Xbox has squandered one of its last competitive advantages. They once offered the best value in gaming… These price increases feel like a betrayal, prioritizing greed over the gaming community. I acknowledge that this Xbox console generation is not yet complete, but it will almost certainly be primarily remembered for Microsoft`s avarice.”
Fryer further enumerated the challenges faced during this console generation, including two hardware price increases, three distinct Game Pass price adjustments, more costly games, extensive employee layoffs, and the closure of multiple studios.
“I believe these collective changes and controversies will damage Microsoft`s brand reputation,” Fryer commented. “It seems Xbox is shifting towards cloud gaming and away from traditional hardware, though it`s also possible they are simply mismanaging affairs and lack a clear understanding of their direction… They must restore confidence among gamers and fans. I know individuals who are still on the Xbox team from its inception… They possess the capability to rectify this situation, and I am hopeful for their success.”
Earlier, Fryer expressed concerns that Xbox might be moving away from hardware development, citing the outsourcing of ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices to Asus. However, Xbox VP Jason Ronald reaffirmed the company`s dedication to its future hardware earlier this year.
After the recent Game Pass announcement, Microsoft clarified that the increased prices would not immediately affect all subscribers. Nonetheless, the premium Game Pass tier is set to lose a popular Call of Duty benefit. Some industry analysts speculate that an ad-supported Game Pass service might be introduced in the future.
