When I was in school, grading on a curve always evoked mixed feelings. If you didn’t quite master a subject as well as you should have, it could be an unexpected advantage, or perhaps, a convenient justification for lower performance. Now, as I approach the review of ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ I find myself in a similar predicament. Do we assess this unconventional superhero sequel purely on its inherent merits, or do we apply a more forgiving lens, considering the unique expectations—or lack thereof—it sets for itself?
