Ubisoft Defends Controversial Switch 2 Game Key Cards for Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft has provided an explanation for its decision to utilize Game Key Cards instead of traditional cartridges for Star Wars Outlaws on the Switch 2, attributing this choice to inherent technical limitations of the console`s physical media.

A lead developer from Ubisoft`s Snowdrop Engine team clarified that the game extensively relies on disk-streaming to efficiently render its expansive open-world environments. He indicated that the standard Switch 2 cartridges simply did not offer the necessary performance to achieve the game`s targeted quality. The developer further elaborated that since the game`s initial development focused on platforms equipped with SSDs, integrating the Switch 2`s capabilities later in the process presented a distinct challenge. He expressed confidence that the company`s leadership ultimately made the most appropriate strategic decision given these circumstances.

The implementation of Game Key Cards has already sparked considerable debate among Nintendo enthusiasts. These cards serve as a download key, providing access to the digital version of the game, rather than containing the complete game data directly on a physical chip. While proponents highlight advantages such as resalability and being free from console-locking, critics raise concerns regarding potential issues for long-term game preservation and the value of physical ownership.

Despite these ongoing controversies, Star Wars Outlaws appears to be a competently executed third-party port for the Switch 2. Initial gameplay footage has demonstrated a consistent performance of 30 frames per second. Although its visual fidelity naturally does not match that of the PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S versions, Ubisoft`s success in ensuring the game runs smoothly on the Switch 2 is a positive indicator for the console`s capabilities and for future releases from the publisher. This favorable outcome contrasts with various reports suggesting less optimal performance for other major titles, such as Elden Ring, on the Switch 2.

Star Wars Outlaws was released for Switch 2 on September 4, arriving approximately a year after its debut on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. This particular version of the game includes both of its downloadable content expansions: “Wild Card” and “A Pirate`s Fortune.” However, the game`s overall commercial performance was reportedly underwhelming for Ubisoft. The company`s CEO had previously implied that the challenging market position of the “Star Wars” brand contributed to the game failing to meet Ubisoft`s sales expectations. It is also worth noting that upon its initial launch, the game received criticism from both reviewers and players for its poorly paced introductory mission and various technical glitches.

Since its release, most of these initial issues have reportedly been addressed and resolved, and the post-launch expansions have generally been well-received by the gaming community.
