Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray

Devoted fans of the iconic series `Twin Peaks` can soon experience its prequel film, `Fire Walk with Me,` in stunning 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray quality. Criterion`s acclaimed restoration of David Lynch`s 1992 cinematic work, initially released in 2017 on Blu-ray and DVD, was already founded on a 4K digital scan personally supervised and approved by Lynch himself. After an eight-year wait, this meticulously crafted restoration will finally be presented in its full 4K UHD glory. The `Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me` 4K UHD Blu-ray is slated for release on October 7th and can be pre-ordered for $50.

Many `Twin Peaks` enthusiasts might have recently acquired various collections that include `Fire Walk with Me,` such as Criterion`s standard Blu-ray edition, which is currently discounted to $20 (originally $40). Earlier this year, Paramount also re-released the popular `Twin Peaks: From Z to A` Blu-ray collection. This comprehensive 21-disc set bundles all three seasons of the television series with the `Fire Walk with Me` prequel film, though the movie is presented in 1080p Blu-ray, not 4K. Priced at $55 (down from $70), the `From Z to A` set does, however, feature 4K versions of the original `Twin Peaks` Pilot episode and Season 3, Episode 8.

Detailed Collection Breakdown

Twin Peaks: From Z to A – Complete Series (Blu-ray)

`Twin Peaks,` created by the visionary David Lynch, is considered one of television`s most memorable series, captivating audiences in the early `90s and again with its groundbreaking third season revival on Showtime in 2017. The `From Z to A` collection serves as a definitive compilation, offering all 30 episodes from the original two seasons, the 1992 prequel film, and the 18-episode 2017 revival. This amounts to 48 episodes of exceptional television and a compelling feature film, all in one package.

  • Season 1 (1990) – 8 Episodes
  • Season 2 (1990-91) – 22 Episodes
  • Season 3 (2017) – 18 Episodes
  • Fire Walk with Me (1992) – Prequel movie

Beyond the episodes and film, this set boasts an extensive array of special features, including 4K versions of the original series Pilot episode and `Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series` Episode 8. Highlights include:

  • The Missing Pieces: Fire Walk with Me deleted/alternate scenes (90 minutes)
  • Behind The Curtain: Making of Footage From Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series
  • Full-length versions of all Roadhouse Bar music performances
  • A Talk with Kyle MacLachlan and Sheryl Lee
  • On the Couch with Kimmy and Harry
  • Additional special features from previous Twin Peaks home releases

With over 20 hours of supplemental content, this collection is a treasure trove for fans. It`s important to note that the recent reprint of `Twin Peaks: From Z to A` uses a plastic case, departing from the original 2019 version`s premium fold-out box and collectible art prints. This change aims to make the set more affordable and keep it in print longer, making it an accessible option for watching the entire series on Blu-ray, even if it`s no longer a collector`s item.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (4K Blu-ray + 1080p Blu-ray) – Criterion Collection

The 4K Blu-ray edition of `Fire Walk with Me` includes both a 4K UHD disc and a 1080p Blu-ray disc. Both discs feature the film and all accompanying special features, ensuring flexibility for various setups.

  • Film and special features on both discs: 4K Blu-ray & 1080p Blu-ray
  • 4K digital restoration supervised by David Lynch
  • DTS TrueHD 7.1 Master Audio supervised by David Lynch
  • DTS 2.0 Master Audio
  • The Missing Pieces: 90 minutes of deleted scenes assembled by David Lynch
  • Actor interviews: Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, and Grace Zabriskie
  • Composer interview: Angelo Badalamenti
  • Trailers
  • English subtitles
  • Excerpts from 1997 book Lynch on Lynch

Criterion`s release is not only a fantastic viewing experience but also a beautiful display piece, complete with an exclusive booklet of essays. While the on-disc content for special features largely mirrors what`s in the `From Z to A` set, the Criterion`s upcoming release is the only way to experience the film in native 4K.

The 1080p Blu-ray edition of `Fire Walk with Me` from Criterion is currently on a 50% off sale until July 27th, as part of Amazon`s Criterion Collection promotion. This version, however, only includes the 1080p Blu-ray disc.

Twin Peaks: The Television Collection (Blu-ray)

Released in 2019, the `Twin Peaks: The Television Collection` on Blu-ray was previously the go-to choice for fans seeking to own the series in 1080p, prior to the `Z to A` reprint this year. This 16-disc collection encompasses both the original 30-episode run and the 18-part `Limited Event Series` (Season 3).

Currently, it`s available for a slightly lower price than `From Z to A.` While `The Television Collection` lacks some of the special features found in `From Z to A` and does not include the `Fire Walk with Me` prequel film, these omissions are minor if you plan to purchase one of the Criterion Collection editions of the movie separately. A notable advantage of `The Television Collection` is its superior box art and packaging compared to `From Z to A`s` oversized plastic case.

Twin Peaks: The Television Collection (DVD)

The `Twin Peaks: The Television Collection` is also available as a 17-disc DVD box set, mirroring its Blu-ray counterpart. Some purists might prefer to watch the show, especially its first two seasons, on a CRT television for an authentic 480p experience. However, it`s generally not recommended for modern displays, where DVD picture quality can often appear suboptimal.

Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series (Blu-ray)

The Blu-ray reprint for Season 3, often referred to as `The Return` or `A Limited Event Series,` also became available in February. This 18-episode Showtime revival is currently on sale for $30.79 (originally $40).

In addition to all the episodes, this set includes various featurettes, a behind-the-scenes photo gallery, and footage from the `Twin Peaks` Season 3 panel at Comic-Con.

If you already own `From Z to A` or `The Television Collection,` there`s generally no need to acquire this set separately, as all 18 episodes of the Showtime series are included in those comprehensive box sets. Unlike the Criterion Collection`s `Fire Walk with Me` edition, purchasing this standalone Season 3 Blu-ray doesn`t offer unique packaging, bonus inserts, or higher resolution to justify a duplicate purchase.
