Directed by Robert Wise, “The Sound of Music” is an acclaimed musical that earned him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture in 1965. The story unfolds in the picturesque Austrian countryside in 1938, introducing Maria (Julie Andrews), a spirited young woman who becomes the governess to the seven children of Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a widowed retired naval captain. As bonds deepen between Maria, Georg, and the children, the family faces upheaval with Germany`s invasion of Austria, necessitating their perilous escape to Switzerland.
While the new Collector`s Edition offers a definitive presentation of the film, other versions are also available. For instance, “The Sound of Music: 50th Anniversary Edition” on Blu-ray, though lacking the new 4K transfer, exclusive art prints, and premium packaging, does include many of the same valuable bonus features.
Beyond “The Sound of Music,” numerous other films are receiving special 4K Blu-ray editions this year. Notable releases already on the market include a Steelbook 4K version of Pixar`s family-friendly sci-fi adventure `Elio,` and the 2025 live-action remake of Disney`s `Lilo & Stitch` in a Steelbook 4K Edition. Additionally, preorders are open for upcoming special edition 4K Blu-rays of other classic movies such as Sam Raimi`s `The Quick and the Dead,` `Rocky Horror Picture Show,` and `The Mask.` A curated selection of these and other forthcoming 4K Blu-ray titles is listed below.
