Helldivers 2 has emerged as one of Sony`s rare successful live-service games, particularly after its multi-platform launch including Xbox Series X|S. Despite its success, players anticipating a direct sequel might be surprised. Arrowhead Game Studio CEO Shams Jorjani aims for Helldivers 2 to be an ongoing experience, lasting indefinitely.
Jorjani recently stated on Discord (as reported by GamesRadar) that there are “no plans for [Helldivers 3]—just [Helldivers 2] for as long as it can go.” He drew a parallel to “RuneScape” to illustrate the concept of maintaining a single game for many years. RuneScape, while receiving two updated versions of its original game, proves that a long lifespan is possible. Interestingly, Helldivers 2 itself arrived nine years after its predecessor, though its significantly greater success could easily warrant a quicker follow-up.
Earlier in the month, Jorjani hinted at a social hub feature, similar to Destiny`s, being considered for what he initially referred to as “Helldivers 3.” However, he later clarified that he was actually referring to Arrowhead`s next project, which remains unannounced and shrouded in mystery.
The “Into the Unjust” update for Helldivers 2 rolled out in September, introducing several challenges. This led Arrowhead to temporarily remove the Rupture Strain subfaction and issue a patch to resolve cave crashes and audio glitches. More recently, the studio acknowledged numerous outstanding problems, such as “performance drops, stability hiccups, freezes, and the annoying audio bugs.” While an October update is scheduled, resolving many of these issues is expected to require more time.
