Super Mario 3D All-Stars Gets a Surprise Switch 2 Patch

Nintendo`s Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a game no longer available for purchase, recently received an unexpected update. This patch, version 1.1.3, is specifically designed to enhance its performance on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo`s official support site broadly states the update “addresses several issues” to “improve gameplay” on the new console.

Curiously, the update notes provide no specifics on what problems were fixed or how the gameplay will benefit on Switch 2. An earlier patch for 3D All-Stars, released on June 3rd just before the Switch 2`s debut, used the same vague language. Furthermore, this collection is not listed among other original Switch titles slated to receive free performance upgrades for the Switch 2.

According to Reddit users who tested the game post-update on a Switch 2, 3D All-Stars reportedly still operates at 1080p when docked, though the user interface might have a higher resolution. Players also observed that Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine continue to run at 30 frames per second.

Launched in September 2020 to commemorate Mario`s 35th anniversary, Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundled Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. This collection was controversially made available for only about six months before Nintendo withdrew it from retail and the eShop. A similar fate befell Super Mario Bros. 35, a battle royale game, which also became inaccessible after the anniversary festivities concluded in March 2021.

Despite “presentational shortcomings,” GameSpot`s review of Super Mario 3D All-Stars gave it an 8/10, deeming it “a worthwhile collection.”

As Super Mario Bros.` 40th anniversary approaches in September, fans are hopeful for a re-release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, ideally with Switch 2 improvements and the addition of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which was notably absent from the original compilation.

However, Nintendo is known for its unpredictable decisions. It`s uncertain if they have something significant planned for the 40th anniversary, or perhaps nothing at all. Any potential Mario-related announcements are likely to come during a rumored Nintendo Direct later this month, if it happens.
