A new rumor suggests that the Steam Deck 2 might not arrive until 2028. This speculation originated from a post on the NeoGAF forum by hardware insider KeplerL2. In a discussion about handheld PC rivals, a user pondered whether forthcoming devices like the ROG Xbox Asus Ally would face competition from new portables by MSI or Valve. KeplerL2`s concise reply, “Steam Deck 2 is 2028,” sparked the rumor, though no further details were provided. Valve has officially remained silent on the release timeframe or hardware specifications for a Steam Deck successor.
Valve had previously indicated that its next Steam Deck model would represent a “generational leap,” countering earlier rumors of a minor revision in 2024. The original Steam Deck debuted in February 2022, followed by an OLED upgrade in November 2023. Valve continues to provide ongoing support, updates, and new features for both versions.
Recently, Valve expanded its “Steam Deck Verified” program. It now applies to any hardware capable of running SteamOS, allowing users to verify game compatibility for devices such as the Legion Go S and other portable PC platforms.
The immense popularity of the Steam Deck has spurred a wave of competitors. Microsoft, for example, is set to launch its own rival, an Xbox-branded version of the ROG Asus Ally, on October 16.
