Stardew Valley Creator Eric Barone Forgoes Payment for Game Collaborations

The recent announcement of a collaboration between Stardew Valley and Infinity Nikki sparked discussions, with many assuming its creator, Eric Barone, would receive a significant financial boost. However, Barone has explicitly stated that he does not get paid for these types of crossovers, and this is by his own design.

“To be clear,” Barone posted on social media, “I never receive any money from these collabs. I`ve only done them because I was a fan of the other games, or because I genuinely thought the players would like it.”

Despite suggestions from fans that he should seek more profit from his successful creation, Barone maintained his stance, replying, “It`s okay, I`ve made enough from sales of the game.”

Historically, most of Stardew Valley`s collaborations have been one-sided, meaning Stardew Valley content appears in other games, such as Balatro. The notable exception was the crossover with Terraria, which uniquely featured collaborative content integrated into both games. Barone expressed great enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “It was great. I love Terraria.”

With over 40 million copies sold at a base price of $15 (though it has been on sale numerous times), Stardew Valley has undoubtedly generated a substantial fortune for Barone, its sole developer.

Even though Barone does not accept direct payment for these collaborations, both he and the Stardew Valley brand undeniably benefit from the heightened exposure and visibility that such partnerships provide.

Barone is currently dedicating his efforts to a new title, Haunted Chocolatier. In this upcoming game, players will manage a confectionery and interact with various characters and ghosts. A release date for Haunted Chocolatier has not yet been announced.
