Spielberg’s Iconic Sci-Fi Thriller Minority Report Gets 4K Blu-Ray Release

Steven Spielberg`s thought-provoking 2002 sci-fi thriller, Minority Report, is set to arrive on 4K Blu-ray on December 9. Fans of Spielberg, Tom Cruise, and author Philip K. Dick can now preorder this stunning 4K restoration. The Limited Edition Steelbook is priced at $37, while the standard 4K Blu-ray edition is available for $31.

Currently, the Minority Report Steelbook Edition is a top-selling movie, indicating significant interest in this release. Another Steven Spielberg film, Catch Me If You Can, also launching on 4K Blu-ray on December 9, is similarly in high demand.

The Steelbook Edition mirrors the 2010 standard Blu-ray`s front cover but boasts a distinct Precrime department emblem on the back. Inside, collectors will find exclusive artwork depicting Tom Cruise`s character utilizing his gesture-controlled interface. This comprehensive two-disc set includes the feature film on 4K Blu-ray, a bonus Blu-ray disc with special features, and a digital copy voucher for added convenience.

Set in 2054, Minority Report centers on John Anderton, a detective in Washington D.C.`s “Precrime” unit. This specialized police division, using the abilities of three precognitive individuals, intervenes to prevent murders before they occur. However, Anderton finds himself targeted by the system when he is falsely accused of a future murder, forcing him to go on the run to prove his innocence and uncover the conspiracy.

The film, based on Philip K. Dick`s 1956 novelette of the same name, premiered in 2002, achieving a global box office total of $358 million. A television series sequel launched in 2015 but was canceled after only ten episodes.

Philip K. Dick`s original Minority Report novelette is available in various collected editions of his classic science fiction. For those interested in the source material, a paperback collection is often available, and the story also features in The Philip K. Dick Reader, which includes other film-adapted works like Total Recall and Paycheck. A hardcover edition can be found in Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick.

The 2002 film adaptation notably diverges from Dick`s novelette. The movie updated outdated concepts like punch card technology to more advanced future tech and expanded the narrative to suit a feature-length cinematic experience, adding new story beats to flesh out the tale for the big screen.

For extensive reading of Philip K. Dick`s works, a comprehensive three-volume hardcover box set from the Library of America is highly recommended. This vast collection, spanning over 2,900 pages, compiles 13 of his classic novels, including Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the basis for Blade Runner). It`s important to note that this particular box set focuses on novels and does not include the Minority Report novelette.
