Silent Hill F: Modders Remove Signature Fog Before Official Launch

Even before its official release on September 25, Silent Hill F has seen its PC early access users develop and deploy several modifications. Most notably, one mod eliminates the franchise`s iconic fog from the eerie Japanese setting of Ebisugaoka, drastically altering the atmosphere for protagonist Hinako Shimizu, at least until the inevitable horrors emerge.

As demonstrated by community posts, removing the dense fog significantly reduces the game`s inherent tension, allowing players to see the environment with crystal clarity. This isn`t a new phenomenon; a similar mod was available for last year`s Silent Hill 2 remake. Other noteworthy community-made enhancements for Silent Hill F include hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a customizable HUD removal, and various engine optimizations.

Silent Hill F marks a significant departure for the series, being the first installment set in Japan. The narrative unfolds in the 1960s, following Hinako as she seeks to comprehend the mystery behind her town`s engulfment in an endless, ominous fog and its infestation by grotesque entities. The game has already received critical acclaim, with a review score of 9 out of 10.

This new entry arrives less than a year after Bloober Team`s successful Silent Hill 2 remake. Due to its positive reception, Konami and Bloober Team are collaborating again on a remake of the original Silent Hill, though a release date has yet to be announced.

Beyond gaming, the Silent Hill universe is expanding to the silver screen next year with Return to Silent Hill. This film adapts the story of Silent Hill 2 and is helmed by the original Silent Hill director and screenwriter, Christophe Gans. The cast includes Jeremy Irvine as James Sunderland, Hannah Emily Anderson as Mary, and Evie Templeton as Laura. Return to Silent Hill is scheduled for theatrical release on January 23, 2026.
