“Screamboat”: Disney-Inspired Slasher Movie Hits 4K Blu-ray

The predictable trend of transforming beloved public domain characters into horror villains continues with “Screamboat,” a film that reimagines Disney`s iconic 1928 character, Steamboat Willie, as a slasher figure. Following a similar dark turn for Winnie the Pooh, Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. Shortly thereafter, the animated horror-comedy short “Screamboat” was conceived. This film is now slated for a Blu-ray release on December 9, which includes a special 4K Steelbook edition.

The 4K Blu-ray package features both 4K and standard Blu-ray versions of the movie. The Ultra HD edition boasts native 4K resolution with HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Its cover art cleverly plays on expectations, depicting Steamboat Willie in a seemingly innocent wave, yet closer inspection reveals him surrounded by gruesome carnage. The back cover showcases a CG-rendered Willie overlooking the New York City skyline.

Screamboat Bonus Material

While the Blu-ray doesn`t offer an extensive array of bonus features, it does include some notable additions:

  • Audio commentary track with actor David Howard Thornton
  • A documentary titled “The Making of Screamboat”
  • Deleted scenes

“Screamboat” was announced mere days after Steamboat Willie became public domain. The narrative centers on a late-night ferry ride in New York, piloted by a homicidal iteration of the mouse, who has been twisted and warped by years of neglect. Passengers aboard the ferry become victims of Willie`s violent rampage. Although some critics have described the movie as a forgettable production or a quick cash grab, its connection to the larger “Terrifier” horror franchise is significant. The producers behind “Terrifier 2” and “3” are also responsible for this film, and David Howard Thornton, known for his role as Art the Clown in the “Terrifier” series, takes on the role of Willie.

Since its theatrical release in April, the movie has received a mixed reception. However, if you`re a fan of extreme violence, practical effects, and the idea of a diminutive mouse brutally murdering people, “Screamboat” might be worth exploring. It`s impressively ultraviolent and designed for enjoyment without overthinking.
