Sweet Tooth, a standout character in Peacock`s Twisted Metal TV series, is physically portrayed by wrestler-actor Samoa Joe and voiced by comedian Will Arnett. As an `agent of chaos,` Sweet Tooth consistently disrupts the narrative with unexpected and violent acts. Despite his heinous actions, Samoa Joe believes Sweet Tooth`s personality aligns perfectly with the cutthroat nature of Hollywood.
During a visit to the Twisted Metal set in Toronto, Samoa Joe shared his perspective: “Growing up in the entertainment industry, I`ve encountered many individuals akin to Sweet Tooth – those relentlessly striving for success, no matter the cost. This relentless energy has always been a part of my surroundings. Having known such driven people throughout my life, I strive to infuse this sense of manic obsession into Sweet Tooth`s portrayal, reflecting a reality where many become consumed by their ambitions.”
Samoa Joe further elaborated on Sweet Tooth`s character, describing him as a profound narcissist. “Sweet Tooth,” he stated, “is convinced the world revolves around him, believing himself to be the central figure in his own movie. This core belief fundamentally defines him and, particularly in this series, fuels his every action.”
Sweet Tooth, according to Samoa Joe, acts solely on his impulses, disregarding any consequences. In the upcoming Season 2, Sweet Tooth will face new rivals, a direct result of his involvement in Calypso`s vehicular combat tournament, where Anthony Carrigan plays Calypso. Joe humorously noted, “He`s desperately eager to eliminate them as soon as possible, yet he`s prevented from doing so. It`s truly maddening for him, much like a child craving a forbidden cookie.”
Fans hoping for a moral transformation in Sweet Tooth should prepare for disappointment. A disturbing flashback in Season 1, revealing his origins, depicts a young Sweet Tooth brutally murdering an innocent golden retriever with knitting needles before a live audience. He also imprisoned his parents and discarded the key. Samoa Joe confirmed the character`s unredeemable nature, stating, “I mean, he killed the dog. I think that`s pretty… yeah, that`s unforgivable.”
Despite his malicious acts, Samoa Joe suggests that Sweet Tooth believes his intentions are ultimately good, albeit leading to horrific outcomes. “A significant part of Sweet Tooth`s motivation,” Joe explained, “is his quest for some form of contentment. His obsession is clearly driven by the pursuit of fame he never truly achieved.”
Showrunner MJ Smith confirmed Sweet Tooth`s expanded role in Season 2, indicating he will appear in “three times as many episodes” as in the first season. Smith concluded, “So we`ll get to see a lot of Sweet Tooth.”
Twisted Metal Season 2 is set to premiere on Peacock on July 31.
