How to set up a Roblox account

To start your Roblox adventure, go to the official Roblox website or download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. When downloading on mobile, ensure it`s the official app from Roblox Corporation. Existing users can log in using the button on the top right of the website (PC) or the `Sign In` button at the bottom of the app. New users should tap `Create Account` in the app to begin.

Account creation is straightforward: provide your birthdate, choose a username (avoiding real names or inappropriate terms), and set a secure password. Gender selection is optional. It`s crucial to create a strong password to protect your account. Roblox requires a minimum of eight characters, but adding numbers and symbols greatly enhances security. For instance, `PlayObbyGames` could become `P1@y0bbyG@m35` by substituting letters with similar-looking numbers and symbols (e.g., `@` for `A`, `0` for `O`, `1` for `L`, `3` for `E`, `5` for `S`).

Upon launching the app for the first time, you`ll see a selection of the platform`s most popular games. Subsequent visits will also display a list of games you`ve previously played, offering the option to resume. Mobile app users can instantly join any experience, while PC users need to download the Roblox client. To play on PC, click the `play` icon on a game`s page for installation instructions. After logging in, launch the game from there to start playing.

While you`re likely excited to jump into a game, it`s beneficial to explore a few key tabs first. The `Charts` tab showcases the top experiences currently available. While many games are free, they often involve microtransactions requiring Robux or in-game currency/time to unlock their full potential. Our recommendations will always specify the type of in-game purchases and whether full engagement requires payment.

The `Create` and `Robux` tabs will be discussed later. For now, let`s look at other options. Beyond the clear `Messages` and `Friends` sections, the `Inventory` tab lets you see items acquired from the Marketplace. `Avatar` allows you to customize your Roblox character, with a useful 3D preview. The `Blog` tab is where you`ll find information on free or gift items in the Marketplace. Lastly, the `Communities` tab provides access to public forums and notifications for in-game events.

What are Robux?

Robux is the official in-game currency of Roblox. It`s primarily used to purchase cosmetic avatar items from the Marketplace or exclusive items within specific games. Many experiences feature in-game hubs where you can use Robux for one-time purchases or subscriptions to unlock shortcuts or unique advantages.

Robux is a significant source of real-world income for developers on the platform. All Roblox games are created using `Roblox Studio,` a free tool accessible via the `Create` tab. Developers utilize this tool to build any experience they envision. This ecosystem allows creators of popular games to earn a living through the Developer Exchange (DevEx) program, primarily via Game Passes, Developer Products, and in-game advertisements/sponsorships.

There are several ways to acquire Robux. The most direct method is purchasing it through the `Robux` tab on your profile. Another option is a Roblox Premium subscription, which grants 1,000 Robux monthly. The `Official Store` tab directs you to Roblox`s Amazon page, where Robux purchases often include bonus exclusive avatar items, along with educational books for Roblox Studio development and PC gaming accessories. Lastly, `Gift Cards` offer a convenient way to share Robux with friends.

A crucial warning: due to its value, Robux is a target for financial scams. Always adhere to this principle: if an offer seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

Roblox controls

For PC players, standard controls use WASD for movement (forward, left, backward, right) and the space bar for jumping. Holding the right mouse button while moving the mouse rotates the camera.

Mobile device users will find the controls intuitive: a virtual joystick for movement and a dedicated jump button. Dragging elsewhere on the screen will adjust the camera view.

Climbing ladders typically involves simply walking onto them, though some games might require a specific button press. To interact with in-game elements, left-click with your mouse or tap on your mobile device.

To exit an experience, PC users should press the Esc key and select `Leave Game.` Mobile app users can tap the Roblox icon in the top left corner and then `Leave.`

Types of Roblox games

While many Roblox games align with traditional video game genres, some less common categories are more prevalent on Roblox, and a few unique genres are exclusive to the platform.

Here are all the less common Roblox game genres:

  • Battlegrounds – These fighting games place players in an arena to battle until a single victor remains, differing from Battle Royale by lacking a shrinking play zone.
  • Dress Up – Games focused on customizing your avatar`s appearance by purchasing or utilizing in-game accessories.
  • Escape Room – Challenges where players must solve intricate puzzles to escape a confined space.
  • Idle – Games that progress with minimal or no active player input, often based purely on accumulated in-game time.
  • Incremental Simulator – Games where progress is achieved by repeatedly performing simple tasks like running, weightlifting, or tapping a counter.
  • Obby – Platforming games centered around navigating increasingly challenging obstacle courses.
  • RPs – Role-Playing experiences (distinct from RPGs) where players embody a character and live out their virtual life, engaging in activities like shopping, driving, and socializing.
  • Scavenger Hunt – A sub-genre of adventure games focused on finding and collecting designated items.
  • Shopping – Games simulating shopping, allowing players to purchase digital or sometimes real-life branded goods (e.g., Ikea, Nike), often including items for avatar customization.
  • Showcase Hubs – Environments built to display a creator`s work or serve as interactive portals that directly teleport players to other games by the same developer.
  • Story – Narrative-driven experiences designed to convey a creator`s story, typically with minimal interactive gameplay.
  • Tower Defense – A widely popular genre (also found outside Roblox) where players construct and upgrade defensive units to protect their base from waves of attacking enemies.
  • Tycoon – Games focused on managing a business (shop, farm, etc.), generating income by selling items to automated `droppers` to expand and unlock new features. While less common recently, titles like `Grow A Garden` suggest a potential resurgence.
