Resident Evil Requiem: Director Explains Dual Camera Modes Choice

Since the release of Resident Evil 7, the non-remake horror games in the series have adopted a first-person perspective, moving away from the third-person view that Resident Evil 4 established as the standard for 3D titles. Resident Evil Village was initially developed with first-person in mind, though a third-person camera mode was added post-launch. When Resident Evil Requiem launches next year, it will offer both first- and third-person modes from day one. However, according to the game`s director, the third-person option was included primarily to make the game less daunting for some players.

In an interview with GamesRadar, director Koshi Nakanishi explained that he implemented the first-person perspective in Resident Evil 7 to make it `more immersive and scarier than ever before.` He noted that he believes `media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary.`

Nakanishi further stated that due to its intensely frightening atmosphere, some players were unable to complete or even begin the game. Therefore, with Requiem, he aimed to ensure the game would be accessible to a wider audience. `If you start the game in first-person perspective and find it`s too much, then third-person is almost a way to step slightly back from that level of horror and make it a bit easier to handle by having your character on screen as a kind of avatar of yourself,` Nakanishi elaborated.

In another recent interview, Nakanishi hinted that Requiem could be the `most extreme` game in the series, suggesting that the inclusion of a third-person mode will likely be a welcome feature for many players.

Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
