The director helming the forthcoming Resident Evil film adaptation has opened up about his plans for the project, revealing an intention to diverge somewhat from the original game`s established lore. He understands this approach might not be universally popular among fans.
Speaking in a recent issue of SFX magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), Zach Cregger mentioned his aim isn`t to be “completely obedient to the lore of the games.” While he didn`t specify the exact alterations, Cregger did state he doesn`t intend to violate “any major rules” of the popular franchise.
To reassure the fanbase, he underlined his own dedication to the series, describing himself as a “gigantic Resident Evil game fan.” Cregger noted he has played every installment and has a particular affection for Resident Evil 4, a game he claims to have played countless times.
Rather than strictly adhering to existing narrative details, Cregger indicated his primary focus is to “tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”
Cregger is evidently prepared for potential negative reactions from the community, acknowledging with realism, “No matter what I do, people are going to come for me online.”
He emphasized that his core motivation is simply to “just make a really good movie and tell a story that`s compelling.” Cregger expressed confidence in his own work, adding, “I know that I`m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”
Cregger`s previous work includes directing the critically acclaimed 2022 horror success Barbarian, which was based on his original concept. His next original film, Weapons, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, is slated for an August release. The Resident Evil movie represents Cregger`s initial foray into directing an adaptation of a major franchise.
Before Barbarian, Cregger co-directed the 2009 sex comedy Miss March with his late Whitest Kids U` Know colleague Trevor Moore, a film that received poor reviews.
In related news concerning the Resident Evil game series, Resident Evil: Requiem is anticipated in February 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Additionally, a mobile game titled Resident Evil Survival Unit is currently under development.
