Krafton envisions a future for PUBG far beyond its battle royale origins, aiming to transform it into a comprehensive “gameplay platform” akin to popular titles like Fortnite and Roblox. This ambitious evolution would encompass a variety of game modes and even content created directly by players, fostering a more expansive and interactive ecosystem.
During a recent earnings call, Krafton`s Chief Financial Officer, Dongkeun Bae, elaborated on this strategic plan. He explicitly stated that “PUBG 2.0” would transcend the traditional battle royale format, becoming a versatile platform with a broad array of game modes currently under development to achieve this objective.
A pivotal step in realizing this transformation involves transitioning PUBG to Unreal Engine 5. Krafton has openly discussed this crucial move since March 2024, recognizing that Epic`s powerful game engine will significantly facilitate the integration of user-generated content, which is an essential component of the broader platform vision.
This strategic shift also includes the development of new spin-off titles set within the expansive PUBG universe. Among these anticipated projects are “PUBG: Blindspot,” described by Krafton as a 5v5 team-based top-down tactical shooter, and “PUBG: Black Budget,” which is reportedly an extraction shooter, further diversifying the PUBG experience.
