A New Setting for the Deadites
Evil Dead: Rise marked a significant departure for the horror saga, swapping the iconic secluded creepy woods for an urban LA apartment building. Once again, the cursed Necronomicon is central to the plot, telling a tale of estranged sisters. The book unleashes flesh-possessing demons, forcing the family to confront a horrifying, nightmarish version of motherhood.
If fans do not wish to wait for the Arrow Video release, older Blu-rays are available. However, it is important to note that the existing 4K and standard Blu-rays come with absolutely no special features. Given the value offered by the extensive bonus content in the Arrow Video Limited Edition, it is strongly recommended that enthusiasts wait for this superior release.
The Wider Evil Dead Franchise on Home Media
The rest of the Evil Dead franchise is generally accessible on Blu-ray and DVD. The main exception is the original 1981 film directed by Sam Raimi; low print runs have made this title somewhat of a collectible in the home media market. Conversely, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness (the other two Raimi-directed movies) are more affordable and available in various formats, including handsome Steelbooks and Collector`s Editions.
The franchise saw a comeback in the 2010s, beginning with the gory 2013 reboot directed by Fede Alvarez. This reboot has been released in several formats, including two Steelbook editions and a 4K Collector`s Edition. Completing the modern collection is the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead, which serves as a continuation of the original Raimi movies and stars Bruce Campbell as the quick-witted Deadite-slayer, Ash Williams. The complete Blu-ray collection contains all three seasons of the horror-comedy show, alongside a wealth of special features, documentaries, and audio commentaries.
