The recent update for the popular game Peak introduces significant changes for both Steam Deck users and speedrunners, particularly addressing a well-known glitch.
Version 1.25.a of Peak brings several updates, with the most notable being its official Steam Deck verification.
“Finally…..the game is good on Steam Deck,” the team wrote in the patch notes. “Deck players will know it`s been good for a while! The Mesa Update added the last of controller support needed and with this patch we`ve added some text adjustments needed to get the Verified badge.”
Beyond Steam Deck compatibility, the patch addresses numerous other issues. A significant fix targets the “Scout Cannon” exploit, which previously allowed players to easily glitch to the mountain`s peak.
“Made fog walls taller so you can`t shoot over them to win the game in a minute with the Scout Cannon exploit,” Team Peak wrote. “A lot of you asked us not to change the Scout Cannon but no promises were made about the map.”
This exploit allowed players to use the Scout Cannon to launch themselves over all five biomes, quickly reaching the mountain`s summit. While the new taller fog walls make this specific shortcut much harder, cannon-assisted aerial maneuvers are still possible. Testing showed that players can still clear a couple of biomes, though the risk of falling into the fog is now significantly higher.
Another interesting addition is the option to disable “The Looker,” a character that previously appeared randomly behind rocks and vanished upon close inspection. For those who keep the feature enabled, “The Looker” will now appear less frequently.
The patch also rectifies an issue where several Steam achievement-linked merit badges, including “Cool Cucumber,” “Plunderer,” “Clutch,” and “First Aid,” failed to unlock despite players meeting the requirements.
Further fixes include beehive adjustments (insect phobia textures now function, and beehives can no longer be stored in backpacks) and various balance tweaks. For instance, hot rocks in the Kiln now inflict correct damage, the “Cure-All” item can remove thorns in the Mesa biome, and the “Magic Beanstalk” now offers a faster climb.
Peak stands out as a prime example of the “friendslop” genre – cooperative games characterized by their relative simplicity, humor, and social focus, akin to titles like R.E.P.O. and Lethal Company. While scaling Peak`s mountain demands skill, elements such as exploding spores, the risk of losing consciousness and falling, and other dangers are designed to evoke comedic moments.
According to Geoff Keighley, Peak has surpassed 10 million sales on Steam and has recently expanded with new features, including a Mesa biome and even cannibalism.
