The Overwatch franchise, first introduced in 2016 with its diverse cast and expanding lore explored through animated shorts, has seen its universe deepen significantly since the release of Overwatch 2 in 2022. Amidst this evolution, game director Aaron Keller has voiced his enthusiasm and hope for the series to eventually be adapted into its own television show.
During a recent discussion with GameSpot, Keller was asked about the possibility of an extensive Overwatch narrative unfolding in a large-scale adaptation, drawing parallels to successful animated series such as Netflix`s Castlevania and Arcane. His reply offered a positive outlook for fans eager for more story content:
“The team would love to have something like that come out. You know, we`re also fans of those shows and fans of those universes. To have something like that for Overwatch would be really, really cool. But I can`t really discuss the plans for future stuff like that.”
This isn`t the first time a potential Overwatch series has been discussed. Blizzard president Johanna Faries previously hinted at new adaptations stemming from the company`s popular game titles. Reports from 2020 indicated that an Overwatch animated series, alongside a Diablo anime, was reportedly in the works at Netflix. However, neither project ultimately saw the light of day. The situation was further complicated by a lawsuit filed by Activision against Netflix, alleging the poaching of an executive.
Beyond the aspirations for external media, Keller also recently acknowledged the pressing need for more impactful story content within Overwatch 2 itself. He emphasized the importance of this aspect, stating, “For me personally, for us to say Overwatch 2 is firing on all cylinders, we need to have some of that come back,” highlighting a key area for the game`s ongoing development.
As an ongoing note, Overwatch 2 Season 18 is officially launching today, adding new content to the game`s evolving narrative.
