Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass Is Adding Nintendo’s Biggest Flop, Virtual Boy

Virtual Boy Makes Its Digital Comeback on Nintendo Switch Online

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass is significantly broadening its retro game library with the addition of a historically infamous platform: the Virtual Boy. Starting February 17, 2026, players will be able to access Virtual Boy games, though a specialized accessory will be necessary to fully experience their unique stereoscopic 3D effects as originally intended.

A newly designed accessory, drawing inspiration from the original Virtual Boy console, will allow users to insert their Switch or Switch 2 system, providing an authentic gameplay experience. Nintendo has indicated that this accessory will be released at a future, unspecified date. Additionally, a more affordable cardboard model, replicating the 3D effect, will be available for $25, while a premium plastic replica is set to retail for $100.

A Glimpse into the Virtual Boy Game Library

During the official presentation, Nintendo teased a selection of 14 Virtual Boy titles slated for release on the service. Among these nostalgic games are:

  • Wario Land
  • Galactic Pinball
  • Red Alarm
  • Telero Boxer
  • Mario Tennis
  • Jack Bros
  • Vertical Force
  • Mario Clash
  • Golf
  • Virtual Bowling
  • Space Invaders

Understanding the Virtual Boy`s Unique Place in Nintendo History

The Virtual Boy is widely remembered as one of Nintendo`s less successful ventures, marked by considerably low sales figures compared to its other iconic systems. Early adopters frequently voiced complaints regarding the discomfort caused by its red-toned stereoscopic 3D display and the inconvenient requirement of peering into goggles, which undermined its portability despite the “Boy” in its name. Regardless of its initial reception, the Virtual Boy holds a distinctive, albeit peculiar, position in Nintendo’s extensive history, and now, a new generation of players will have the opportunity to explore this unique piece of gaming heritage for themselves.
