Naughty Dog`s Neil Druckmann on the Future of The Last of Us 3, Uncharted 5, and Intergalactic
Neil Druckmann, the head of Naughty Dog, has shared his perspectives on the studio`s potential projects following the completion of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, touching upon the possibility of developing The Last of Us 3 or Uncharted 5.
In an interview with Variety, Druckmann expressed optimism for Intergalactic`s success. He noted that if the project proves popular, “you will see it again” in the form of a potential sequel. However, Druckmann did not confirm whether a hypothetical Intergalactic 2 would be Naughty Dog`s immediate next game, stating, “I leave that door open.”
Druckmann emphasized that after Intergalactic is finished, he plans to take a pause to assess the team`s status and their feelings before considering “the options in front of us” for their next undertaking.
“We also have several other concepts we`re keen to explore,” Druckmann added.
During the same interview, Druckmann highlighted that Naughty Dog achieves its best work when the entire team collectively supports a particular game or vision, rather than simply creating a sequel out of obligation. As an illustration, he recounted the period after The Last of Us II`s completion, when the studio extensively debated whether to immediately begin work on The Last of Us 3. “We spent a considerable amount of time exploring potential ideas for what that game could entail,” Druckmann explained.
Druckmann further disclosed that following the completion of The Last of Us 2, Naughty Dog also reviewed its other owned franchises, such as Uncharted and Jak and Daxter. Ultimately, the studio chose to focus on Intergalactic, because “that`s where our passions lie.”
Regarding The Last of Us 3, Druckmann had previously offered hints about its potential existence. Concerning the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog has stated that if they do not develop Uncharted 5 themselves, they would be content for another studio to undertake its creation.
The project Intergalactic is currently in development, though an official release date has not yet been announced. An earlier report this year suggested that the game is unlikely to launch before 2027.
