Digital Eclipse has officially confirmed that two previously unavailable PlayStation-era games, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat Special Forces, will be included in the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. These spin-offs, which have been absent from PC and newer consoles for decades, will be enhanced along with the other games in the series.
The studio promises a range of improvements, such as a rewind feature for more forgiving gameplay, on-screen move lists, a “Trainer Mode” for mastering combos and fatalities, and reduced load times in each game.
Another significant addition to the collection is the WaveNet edition of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. This version was originally developed for Midway`s online matchmaking service for arcade machines and was the only Mortal Kombat arcade game to feature Noob Saibot as a playable character. The importance of this version is highlighted by NetherRealm`s lead QA analyst Stephanie Brownback, who notes that its technology was ahead of its time, it featured significant gameplay changes, and it was long thought lost until a working arcade cabinet was discovered.
If you never played Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero or Mortal Kombat Special Forces, you missed out on some truly unique experiences. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, released in 1997, was a side-scrolling action game that retained the combat system of 2D Mortal Kombat. In practice, however, its unforgiving platforming sections, brutally difficult traps, and clumsy controls made the game a chore to play. Despite these flaws, it featured an interesting skill-tree system and live-action cinematics that rivaled the 1995 film in terms of “cheese” factor.
Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, which appeared in 2000, went through a difficult development. Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias and several other staff members left Midway before the game was finished, leading to content cuts and the cancellation of plans to include Sonya Blade as a playable character. This game is not fondly remembered, but it remains an interesting part of Mortal Kombat history that Digital Eclipse is preserving for a new generation of players.
