ModRetro`s popular modernized Game Boy, the Chromatic handheld, is back in stock following its rapid sell-out last year. ModRetro has relaunched the device, offering it in seven vibrant new colors. In addition to the console itself, the company is also introducing new games and accessories. Consumers can choose between two versions: a $200 model featuring scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, and a premium $300 model with ultra-durable Sapphire Glass.
The game library for the Chromatic is also growing with the addition of five new titles. These include a mix of genres, from story-focused adventures to classic re-releases. The new games are: Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped (a re-release of the fast-paced platformer), Wicked Plague (an old-school metroidvania), Self-Simulated (a precision platformer with over 100 levels), First Contact Protocol (an adventure-puzzle game with branching narratives and cutscenes), and Gravitorque (a puzzle-platformer).

Every Chromatic console includes Tetris, and ModRetro promises continuous support and software updates. Future updates will add native game streaming capabilities, allowing users to stream directly to Discord, Mac, and PC without needing extra hardware. ModRetro is also releasing new accessories, including:
- ModRetro Rechargeable Power Core ($29.99): A snap-in battery that adds up to 16 hours of gameplay power
- ModRetro Link Cable ($14.99): Enables couch co-op between Chromatics with head-to-head multiplayer support
- ModRetro Mod Kit ($14.99): High-quality swappable parts that can be used to customize the Chromatic
- ModRetro Koss Porta Pro ($49.99): A retro-inspired headset for the Chromatic
Compared to many modern Game Boy alternatives that often use emulation, the ModRetro Chromatic stands out. This $200 handheld replicates the look and feel of a classic Game Boy but is constructed with high-quality components, making it a very well-built device. Notably, it can play original Game Boy cartridges.
A review from Steven Petite praised the device, stating, “ModRetro`s Chromatic is a truly superb recreation of the Game Boy Color… If you want a near-exact replica of your childhood Game Boy with a backlit screen, this is the handheld for you. At $199… I`d argue the Chromatic is a bargain due to its ridiculously premium build. But this is a bargain for a very specific type of retro gamer.”
