After nearly two years of no new updates, Mario Kart Tour is set to receive fresh content. This unexpected change comes in the form of a special event next week, designed to celebrate the recent launch of Mario Kart World on the new Switch 2 console.
The official Mario Kart Tour account on X (formerly Twitter) announced details of this special campaign. Players can look forward to new mechanic-themed outfits for Mario and Luigi, alongside four new karts. The event is scheduled to commence on July 23 and will conclude on August 6, running for a fortnight.
This Mario Kart World celebratory event will be integrated into the existing `Sunshine Tour,` which first appeared in 2023 and was re-run last summer. It`s worth noting that in September 2023, Nintendo had previously declared that Mario Kart Tour would no longer receive new content, opting instead to re-run existing tours like the Sunshine Tour. Despite this, Mario Kart Tour had already achieved significant success by 2021, reportedly accumulating 200 million downloads and generating $200 million in revenue.
Mario Kart World itself debuted last month, coinciding with the launch of the Switch 2. Reports indicate an impressive 79% attachment rate, meaning a large majority of Switch 2 purchasers also bought the new racing title. This high adoption rate was likely influenced by Nintendo`s strategic offering of a Switch 2 bundle that included Mario Kart World.
