After nearly a decade in development, the highly anticipated TV series based on the beloved “Life is Strange” video game franchise has officially received a greenlight from Amazon MGM Studios. This significant announcement marks a major step forward for fans eagerly awaiting the adaptation of the critically acclaimed narrative adventure.
Charlie Covell, renowned for her work on “The End of the F***king World” and “Kaos,” will serve as the series` creator and showrunner. Production will be a collaborative effort between Square Enix, the rights holder of the game series, Story Kitchen (producers of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films), and LuckyChap, Margot Robbie`s prominent production company.
Covell expressed her profound enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It`s a huge honor to be adapting Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios. I am a massive fan of the game, and I`m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap.”
The series will center on the compelling narrative of Max and Chloe, the iconic protagonists from the first “Life is Strange” game. The core premise involves Max`s extraordinary ability to rewind time, a power that inevitably leads to complex choices and often dramatic events. Covell shared her excitement to bring their heartfelt and impactful story to both existing players and new audiences alike.
While the concept for a “Life is Strange” TV show has been in discussions for almost ten years, this recent announcement signifies the first official order for its production. In 2021, reports suggested that singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes was in talks to oversee the music for the show, though his current involvement remains unconfirmed.
This news arrives during a particularly active period for video game adaptations across various media. Recent announcements include a “Call of Duty” movie from Paramount, the casting of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in Amazon`s “Tomb Raider” series, the cancellation of Netflix`s animated “The Legend of Lara Croft,” and new details regarding the release date and cast for a “Street Fighter” movie.
Amazon is notably expanding its investment in game-to-screen adaptations, with “Life is Strange” joining its growing roster. This includes the aforementioned “Tomb Raider” series, a long-developing “God of War” series, a highly anticipated second season of “Fallout,” and upcoming shows based on the popular “Mass Effect” and “Wolfenstein” franchises.
The original “Life is Strange” game was developed by the French studio Dontnod and initially launched in 2015. It has since expanded into a successful franchise with multiple sequels and spin-offs, the most recent being “Life is Strange: Double Exposure” from Deck Nine, released in 2024.
