Lego’s Epic Batman Arkham Asylum: A Collector’s Dream Set

At San Diego Comic-Con, Lego unveiled its new large-scale building set for adults and collectors, dedicated to Batman. The “Lego Batman: Arkham Asylum” set is a colossal 2,953-piece model recreating Gotham City`s psychiatric hospital, where the Caped Crusader`s numerous foes are often confined (before their inevitable escapes). This meticulously detailed replica of Arkham Asylum includes 16 minifigures and boasts a modular design that, according to Lego, can also serve as a 24-day buildable Advent Calendar.

The Lego DC Batman Arkham Asylum set is slated for release on September 9 and is available for preorder at $300, exclusively through the official Lego Store.

A Unique Advent Calendar Experience

Although Lego DC Arkham Asylum is not officially classified as an Advent Calendar, its construction lends itself perfectly to the daily building approach characteristic of popular holiday countdown calendars. You can assemble one section of the building each day for 24 days. Given the extensive collection of 16 Batman heroes and villains included as minifigures, you`ll also receive a new character almost every day.

Included Minifigures:

  • Batman
  • Robin
  • Batwoman
  • Catwoman
  • Batwing
  • The Joker
  • Harley Quinn
  • The Riddler
  • The Penguin
  • Bane
  • Mr. Freeze
  • Poison Ivy
  • Scarecrow
  • Killer Croc
  • Security Guard (x2)

Lego`s actual Advent Calendars are significantly smaller than this set (the 2025 editions will retail for $45 and launch on September 1), making Arkham quite a luxurious choice for your countdown this year.

Beyond the Advent Calendar: Detailed Features

Of course, you can entirely forgo the Advent Calendar approach and build the entire set in one weekend. The complete three-story asylum measures 10.23 x 9.84 x 12.59 inches. If that seems somewhat small given the piece count, it`s because the model is densely packed, with a strong emphasis on the interior rooms. Furthermore, unlike some Lego sets that lack exterior walls on the sides and back, Arkham Asylum is a fully enclosed structure.

Upon finishing the build, you can separate the three floors to display and reconfigure the furnished rooms and holding cells. Sections on each floor are also designed for easy removal. Prison cell doors can swing open with the press of a button, and villains can personalize their cells with 65 stickers inspired by Batman lore.

All minifigures come with transparent stands that attach to the building or front yard. These stands are designed to enable dynamic poses, as if you`ve paused a movie scene.

The set also features an Arkham Asylum inmate transport van. Promotional images show the van being operated by Harley Quinn, clearly on the verge of successfully breaking the Joker out of the hospital.

Other Exciting Lego Sets from San Diego Comic-Con

Arkham Asylum is one of several exciting Lego sets that debuted at SDCC. Lego also unveiled its Game Boy building set, a 421-piece replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy. The Lego Game Boy launches on October 1, the same day as the newly announced Stranger Things BrickHeadz. This four-pack of buildable figures is only the second Lego Stranger Things set (the first was released in 2019) and arrives just in time for the highly anticipated final season on Netflix. Lego will also expand its “Wicked” building set lineup with six new products, including display models for adults and playsets, releasing on September 1.

The new Arkham Asylum display model joins the existing catalog of impressive Lego sets featuring the Caped Crusader, Gotham`s most notorious villains, numerous Batmobile variations, and other iconic Gotham City landmarks.

Arkham Asylum is not the only Batman Lego set launching soon. You can pass the time until September by acquiring the Batman Forever Batmobile. This 909-piece recreation of the unique design from the 1995 film launches on August 1 and costs $100. It`s one of many Batman Lego sets that focus on the Batmobile or his other stylish rides, such as the Bat-Pod from The Dark Knight Trilogy. The Bat-Pod is available in a cool set with a buildable Batman Construction Figure for $48 (originally $65) at Walmart. Meanwhile, the retired Lego Technic: Batcycle from The Batman (2022) is exclusively available at Walmart and on sale for $40 (originally $50).

The Arkham Asylum set will be one of the most elaborate Batman Lego sets in the current collection. However, it does not have the highest piece count. That distinction belongs to Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, a large 3D wall art piece depicting the cityscape. It retails for the same $300 price as Arkham Asylum but contains 4,210 pieces. The Arkham Asylum build is likely to be more dynamic, as these 3D art pieces often have high piece counts due to the tiny bricks used to create their detailed backdrops.

Beyond Lego, Batman enthusiasts should also consider the upcoming Amazon-exclusive Steelbook Library Edition of The Dark Knight Trilogy. It includes four steelbook cases, various collectibles, and a metal case for storage and display.
