The “Universes Beyond” initiative from Magic: The Gathering is renowned for its unique and sometimes unexpected collaborations. At MagicCon Atlanta, a booth promoting a new Secret Lair drop featuring Furby inadvertently sparked rumors of another potential partnership. This arose after an individual in a Furby costume was observed dancing with someone dressed as Kirby.
On Saturday of the convention, as Furby took its spot on a miniature dance floor in front of its dedicated area, a person in a large Kirby costume joined the celebration, dancing for nearly 30 minutes. Wizards of the Coast later confirmed that this was purely coincidental; a fan simply arrived in a Kirby suit and decided to participate in the fun.
Despite the explanation, images of the dancing mascots quickly circulated across social media platforms. Users began to speculate whether Kirby might indeed be joining Magic: The Gathering. Others, however, correctly dismissed the idea, surmising that the individuals in the Kirby suit were simply “random convention-goers.”
If Nintendo were to entertain the concept of a Magic: The Gathering collaboration, there are numerous precedents. Many video game franchises have recently integrated into the game, some with original card designs based on their characters. For instance, the recent Final Fantasy set became the best-selling MTG set of all time on its release day. Additionally, Secret Lair drops for Sonic The Hedgehog, Tomb Raider, and Street Fighter have already been released, each featuring unique card artwork.
Meanwhile, during the MagicCon Atlanta Secret Lair panel, Wizards of the Coast announced a new partnership with PlayStation. A PlayStation-themed Secret Lair superdrop is scheduled for October 27, featuring iconic games such as God of War (both Greek and Norse sagas), The Last Of Us Parts I and II, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon: Forbidden West.
Given these developments, a potential Nintendo collaboration—either through a full Universes Beyond set or smaller Secret Lair drops—does not seem far-fetched.
Further announcements from MagicCon included a lineup of expansions planned for release in 2026, featuring popular franchises like The Hobbit, Star Trek, and Marvel Super Heroes, alongside Secret Lair drops collaborating with Jaws, The Office, Furby, and more.
