Hollow Knight: Silksong Rockets Past 4.2 Million Sales

Hollow Knight: Silksong made a significant impact since its release early this month, achieving impressive figures that would be enviable for many major developers. Initially attracting five million players within days, partly due to Game Pass downloads, the game is now reportedly approaching five million total sales across all platforms.

Sales Breakdown Across Platforms

According to recent sales estimates from the GameDiscoverCo newsletter, Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold an estimated 3.2 million copies on Steam. An additional 500,000 copies each were sold on PlayStation 4/5 and Nintendo Switch 1/2. This brings the current documented sales total to 4.2 million, excluding any figures from Xbox consoles. While specific Xbox sales data remains undisclosed, the game saw an estimated 1.5 million downloads on Xbox Game Pass.

For the week of September 7-13, Alinea Analytics reported Steam sales where Borderlands 4 led with 749,000 units, with Silksong ranking second at 530,000 sales. Remarkably, Silksong`s launch also boosted sales of the original Hollow Knight, which reached 205,000 copies that week, securing the No. 4 position. This marks the third consecutive week the original Hollow Knight has exceeded 200,000 sales, despite its lifetime sales already surpassing 15 million units.

Industry Reactions and Post-Launch Updates

The significant success of Team Cherry`s Silksong has not been entirely without industry criticism. Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, creative director of `Hell is Us`, recently voiced his disapproval of Team Cherry`s decision to release Silksong on September 4 with only two weeks` prior announcement. `Hell is Us` had reportedly planned its release for that date for six months, and Jacques-Belletête suggests that Silksong`s abrupt launch negatively affected his game`s sales performance.

Following its release, some players found the game`s difficulty challenging, leading to the creation of fan-made mods to simplify gameplay. Responding to this feedback, Team Cherry released an official patch to reduce Silksong`s difficulty and is currently developing a second patch to address various bugs.
