Ghost Of Yotei Brings Back Kurosawa Mode, Adds New Modes From Samurai Film Directors

Sucker Punch is set to revive the popular Kurosawa Mode, first introduced in Ghost of Tsushima, for the upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. This black-and-white cinematic mode, originally developed in collaboration with the estate of the legendary director Akira Kurosawa, was confirmed to return during the recent State of Play event. However, the homage to samurai cinema doesn`t stop there.

During the gameplay deep dive, the developers of Ghost of Yotei announced a partnership with director Takashi Miike, known for films such as 13 Assassins. This collaboration introduces a new mode designed to provide a more intense and visceral combat experience. The mode will feature a closer camera perspective on battle sequences and increase the amount of mud and blood splatter on screen, aiming for a raw and intimate feel.

A third collaboration brings director Shinichirō Watanabe, acclaimed for works like Samurai Champloo, into the project. The development team highlighted that Watanabe personally directed his specific mode within the game. This unique addition enhances the game`s atmosphere by incorporating original lo-fi music tracks into Ghost of Yotei`s soundtrack.

A significant revelation from the State of Play presentation was about Ghost of Yotei`s protagonist, Atsu. Unlike previous characters, Atsu`s combat style is not limited to traditional samurai or shinobi weapon sets. Instead, she possesses the ability to carry and utilize a diverse arsenal of weapons as the situation demands. Furthermore, Atsu will be able to form bonds and fight alongside other characters, including a wolf companion.
