GenAI: “Very Seducing,” Says Battlefield 6 Boss

Electronic Arts has long integrated artificial intelligence technologies into its development processes. Although Battlefield 6 does not feature content created with generative AI, DICE GM Rebecka Coutaz described the technology as “very seducing.”

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, she explained that EA`s teams utilize generative AI during early development stages to “allow more time and more space to be creative.” However, Battlefield 6 itself contains no such content. Overall, she remains optimistic about the technology, stating: “If we can break the magic with AI it will help us be more innovative and more creative.”

Another Battlefield 6 developer, Fasahat “Fas” Salim, stated that generative AI is “not anything to be scared of” within the video game industry. According to him, teams are actively exploring the best methods to integrate this technology into future development pipelines. He added: “It`s simply a matter of how we can productively incorporate it into our workflows; how we can leverage it to take our games to the next level.”

The enthusiasm of EA developers for AI is not surprising, as other company executives, including CEO Andrew Wilson, have previously stated that these tools will benefit EA in the long run. Wilson acknowledged that broader AI adoption might lead to job displacements, but ultimately it will create more jobs than it eliminates over time.

Previously, EA Sports stated that CFB 25 might not have achieved its quality without developers employing machine learning and AI. Outside of EA, Sony has utilized AI tools in game development for years, crediting machine learning systems for significantly accelerating the creation of Marvel`s Spider-Man 2.

Concurrently, Candy Crush developers laid off by Activision Blizzard claimed they are being replaced by AI tools they themselves helped create. A recent Financial Times report also suggested that EA might further integrate AI systems to accelerate development amidst its private sale to an investor consortium.

Battlefield 6 launches today, October 10th, across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game arrives with considerable anticipation, preceding its rival, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which is slated for November release by a few weeks.
