11 bit studios has announced that their city-building strategy game, Frostpunk 2, will be released on consoles on September 18. On the very same day, the game will become available on Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, two distinct physical editions of the game will be offered.
While Frostpunk 2 is already a part of PC Game Pass, its console counterpart will be added to the service upon release. The physical editions come in two versions: the “Icebreaker Edition” includes the game, a digital novella, a digital artbook, and a pop-up diorama of New London. The more premium “Whiteout Edition” encompasses all items from the “Icebreaker” version, along with access to three upcoming Frostpunk 2 DLCs and extra physical collectibles such as a keychain, New London postcards, and a faction patch.

Igor Skibinski, production coordinator at 11 bit studios, stated in a press release that their primary goal for the console version of the post-apocalyptic strategy game was to ensure seamless controls. Following the console release, a PC update will introduce the console’s user interface when a controller is used. Skibinski emphasized, “We aim to prove once again that even complex strategy games can feel intuitive and satisfying on consoles.”
When Frostpunk 2 makes its console debut (the PC version was released in September 2024), it will join the original Frostpunk, which is also available on Game Pass for consoles. This survival-focused city-building franchise challenges players to make difficult choices to ensure civilization`s survival amidst an endless winter, requiring management of essential resources like food and heat, while also navigating social unrest.
Earlier this year, 11 bit studios also announced a remake of the original Frostpunk, being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and titled Frostpunk 1886. This name references a pivotal year in the game`s lore. The remake is planned to offer more than just visual upgrades, incorporating new content, mechanics, laws, and official mod support, which was not feasible with the original game`s engine.
Regarding Frostpunk 2, 11 bit studios confirmed their commitment to continuous support with new updates and content, asserting that the development of both Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 will “evolve side by side.” According to the Frostpunk 2 roadmap, the game will receive numerous free major content updates and paid DLCs, with some expected in 2025 and more scheduled for 2026.
