Final Fantasy’s Combat Direction: No Clear Path Back to Turn-Based, Says Producer

The ongoing discussion surrounding the future of the Final Fantasy series` combat system continues. Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XVI, weighed in on the debate, admitting there is no straightforward answer regarding whether the mainline games will revert to turn-based combat.

Final Fantasy XVI represented a significant shift for the franchise, fully embracing real-time action gameplay and even removing the command menus present in the action-oriented Final Fantasy XV. Speaking at Anime Expo, Yoshida was asked about a potential return to a turn-based system, especially considering the recent positive reception for games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which drew inspiration from classic Final Fantasy and Persona titles.

Yoshida explained that evaluating turn-based versus action combat shouldn`t isolate just the battle mechanics. He elaborated that the decision is influenced by the overall experience the developers aim to provide, including the desired graphical quality and narrative delivery. The battle system, game design, and overall gameplay feel are intrinsically linked, making it impossible to give a simple yes or no answer on whether future installments will lean towards turn-based or action styles.

He also pointed out that each numbered mainline Final Fantasy title is typically developed by a different team and features distinct settings, characters, and gameplay mechanics. Yoshida specifically noted that he might not be involved in Final Fantasy 17 or subsequent games, emphasizing the importance of not restricting the creative freedom of future directors or producers.

Final Fantasy XVI was released on PlayStation 5 in 2023, followed by a Steam release later that year, and arrived on Xbox Series X|S in May 2024. This multiplatform strategy signals a move away from console exclusivity for Square Enix, a trend also highlighted by the planned September launch of Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles across various platforms.
