Ubisoft recently made headlines with the brief, then swift, deletion of an announcement regarding a new television series based on its popular Far Cry video game franchise. Despite the attempt to remove the news from its official site, the internet`s permanence ensured the details were preserved, confirming the adaptation is indeed underway.
According to reports circulating on Reddit, originating from those who caught the initial announcement, the series is reportedly in development at FX. Rob Mac, the acclaimed actor from It`s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (who recently changed his name from Rob McElhenney), is attached to both star in and produce the show. Joining him in the production team are Noah Hawley, known for his work on Alien: Earth, alongside Jackie Cohn, Michael Garcia, and Nick Frenkel. Ubisoft will also be represented by Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill, who are involved in various capacities.
Margaret Boykin, in the since-removed announcement, was quoted describing the collaboration as “an embarrassment of riches.” She emphasized that the Far Cry series, with its deep dive into the psychological complexities and often absurd aspects of humanity, perfectly aligns with FX`s reputation for bold and unflinching storytelling.
The proposed format for the show is an “anthology drama,” which means each season will introduce a new setting and a distinct cast of characters. This approach directly mirrors the diverse narrative structures and worlds explored across the various installments of the Far Cry video games. This initiative is part of Ubisoft`s broader strategy to enhance its core intellectual properties, which include Assassin`s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, through a new subsidiary partly funded by Tencent and overseen by Charlie Guillemot, the son of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
In the gaming realm, the last major release, Far Cry 6 in 2021, received a rather mixed reception from critics. Rumors have since surfaced suggesting Ubisoft is looking to significantly overhaul the franchise`s signature open-world formula for its next two entries. Meanwhile, older titles continue to see updates, with Far Cry 4 recently getting a performance boost to 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, enhancing its appeal for modern players.
