The indie game “Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3” initially presented itself as a sequel to a fictional franchise. Now, Strange Scaffold has partnered with newcomer Pedalboard Games to create a sort of prequel – a remastered version of the first game in the series, which had not actually existed until now. The game is set to release in September.
In “Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 1: ReRaptored,” players will assume the role of Jack Briar, an ATF agent dispatched to the Louisiana bayou to investigate strange dinosaur occurrences. The game closely resembles the original CRDM3, released in April, though with a new protagonist. The original was a story-driven match-3 metroidvania, requiring players to explore different narrative paths and engage in match-3 battles to progress. “ReRaptored” appears similar: Jack Briar will acquire new abilities by exploring the world and use them to unlock new paths. CRDM3 also featured a playful commentary on the game development process itself, a trend likely to continue.
While Strange Scaffold developed the first game, the new studio Pedalboard Games is developing “ReRaptored.” This marks the launch of Strange Scaffold`s “Project Share” program, which grants nascent studios access to original code, enabling them to build upon its concepts. Xalavier Nelson Jr. of Strange Scaffold elaborated on the philosophy behind this initiative on BlueSky.
“Video games are the only medium, apart from music, that can take identical component pieces and, by modifying them and altering their context, create a new, relevant, exciting artistic expression,” he stated. “This can be observed in the modding world, but not in traditional commercial video game development.”
Consequently, Strange Scaffold provided tools to Pedalboard Games, supervised by original co-lead Colin McInerney, allowing that team to rapidly iterate on the project and transform it into a new game.
“We don`t intend to frequently engage in `Project Share` at Strange Scaffold, but we hope that by undertaking it at all and being so transparent about it, we empower and encourage other developers to explore radical methods, unmotivated by capitalism, to share resources, survive, and deliver games to players more quickly and at a higher quality than would otherwise be possible, in a more sustainable way, for the benefit of all of us.”
“Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3” is currently available on Steam, and “Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 1: ReRaptored” is slated for release on September 23.
