Dragon Quest VII Remake Reportedly in Development

A new report suggests that Square Enix is working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII. The original RPG debuted on PlayStation in Japan in 2000 and in the US in 2001. This new version is reportedly planned for release sometime in 2026.

According to MP1st, the Dragon Quest VII initiative is being called a `remake,` not an `HD remake` like the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake released last year. This suggests the game might receive significant changes beyond just updated graphics, potentially including gameplay modifications. However, Square Enix is first releasing Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30.

On a related note, Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, mentioned earlier this year his personal desire to work on Final Fantasy VI next. He noted that this classic RPG greatly influenced Octopath Traveler, the first game using the HD-2D style.

This isn`t the first time Dragon Quest VII has been updated by Square Enix. In the middle of the 2010s, the company released Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for the Nintendo 3DS. That updated edition featured revamped visuals and enemies that were visible on the world map.

Square Enix is also actively remaking the seventh installment of another major RPG series, Final Fantasy VII. The scenario for the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake was finished early in 2025. In May, the company confirmed the whole Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy would be available on Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (part two) came out in 2024, but the release date for the concluding part remains unannounced.
