Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Announced for Nintendo Switch

After months of anticipation, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined was officially announced during Friday`s Nintendo Direct event. This remastered version of the iconic JRPG is set to launch on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 5, 2026, with pre-orders now open on the Nintendo eShop.

Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a full-scale remake of the original 2000 PlayStation title. The project showcases updated visuals reminiscent of the Dragon Quest XI engine. The story follows a young hero from the peaceful island of Estard who, along with friends Kiefer and Maribel, discovers ancient ruins. These ruins unlock the ability to travel to long-lost continents sealed away in the past. As players journey through time, they must resolve the tragedies that led to the destruction of these lands and restore them, gradually rebuilding the world piece by piece.

Notably, ten years ago, at the 2015 Nintendo Direct, the Western release of the Dragon Quest VII remake for Nintendo 3DS, titled Fragments of the Forgotten Past, was announced, launching in 2016. However, that 3DS version was abridged, with some content, such as the intro, removed to shorten the game`s length.

Other Square Enix Remakes: Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest

In addition to this project, Square Enix is actively working on another significant remake series: Final Fantasy VII. The scenario for the third and final part was completed in early 2025, marking a major development milestone for the trilogy. In May, the company announced that all three parts of the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (released in 2024), will be available on Nintendo Switch 2. While the final installment`s release date has not yet been announced, development is ongoing.

While awaiting Dragon Quest VII`s release, players can dive into other entries in the series. For instance, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, launched last year, is already available. Furthermore, Square Enix plans to release the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30.
