With its release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S just around the corner on April 16th, Big Bad Wolf has showcased the gameplay for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss in a new video. The presentation offered a detailed look at the title’s first-person investigative mechanics.
Heavily inspired by the captivating world of H.P. Lovecraft, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss follows Noah, an Ancile agent dispatched into the ocean’s depths to investigate the puzzling disappearance of a submarine station’s crew. This deep-sea quest leads Noah and his AI assistant, KEY, to the legendary sunken city of R’lyeh. Said to be the prison of the mighty god Cthulhu, R’lyeh emanates an oppressive aura of madness and negative energy, capable of pushing anyone who encounters it to the brink of insanity.
The core gameplay centers on the meticulous analysis of clues. Players will manipulate and examine objects to determine their composition, a process that unlocks new sonar frequencies and helps identify similar elements within the environment. However, careful energy management is paramount for these analyses. Over-reliance on these tools will escalate “mental corruption,” gradually pulling Noah’s consciousness deeper into the abyss of madness.
Horror and Technology
As highlighted in previous trailers for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, the protagonist is equipped with advanced technology to aid his investigation. This includes a sonar system, a comprehensive database for data collection, and the invaluable artificial intelligence, KEY.
These technological aids can be upgraded throughout the campaign, though not always permanently. The effectiveness and availability of these enhancements, much like the unfolding narrative, will be significantly shaped by the choices players make during their deep-sea exploration.
