Clair Obscur Confirmed as Franchise, Future of Expedition 33 Explored

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has garnered significant praise from both critics and players, establishing itself as a strong contender for game of the year. Following such a successful debut from a brand-new studio, a common question naturally arises: What’s next?

Developer Sandfall Interactive remains largely reserved about its future plans, but in a recent interview with game director Guillaume Broche, it was at least confirmed that Expedition 33 will not be the sole entry in the Clair Obscur universe.

Speaking to YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Broche explicitly stated that “Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. The exact nature and concept of what comes next are still too early to announce, but what is certain is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.”

Broche`s cautious approach is understandable, especially since Expedition 33 was released only in April of this year. Given the extensive development cycles inherent in game production, and Broche’s expressed desire to maintain a relatively small team moving forward, details regarding a potential sequel or new installment are likely a long way off.

The game notably draws inspiration from the Final Fantasy series, which often employs an anthological approach to its releases, featuring distinct stories within the same overarching brand. This stylistic choice prompts speculation about whether a future Clair Obscur title would serve as a direct follow-up to Expedition 33 or introduce an entirely new narrative and cast of characters within the established world.

For those who have not yet experienced the game and are seeking more information to help decide if it’s the right fit, exploring available reviews can provide further insights.
