The eagerly awaited release date for Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially disclosed, arriving sooner than many had speculated. The game is slated to launch on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Following closely, the Switch 2 version will become available on October 3, as confirmed by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford via a social media update.
Prior to this announcement, there were widespread theories and concerns that the Switch 2 iteration of Borderlands 4 might experience a significant delay, potentially pushing its release into late 2025 or even 2026. However, these worries have been alleviated. Gearbox and 2K Games had consistently maintained that Borderlands 4 would not launch simultaneously across all platforms, including the Switch 2.
Further insights into the game`s development were revealed in a Nintendo “Creator`s Voice” episode dedicated to Borderlands 4. This segment confirmed that the Switch 2 version was developed entirely in-house by Gearbox, opting against outsourcing the port to an external developer. This approach highlights Gearbox`s direct involvement and commitment to the Switch 2 platform.
Randy Pitchford expressed strong enthusiasm for the Nintendo Switch 2`s capabilities, particularly for a title like Borderlands 4, emphasizing its suitability for cooperative play:
“When you play Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, you`ll realize that with the cooperative experience and how we can use the Nintendo Switch 2 platform to connect with friends, share our game with friends… it`s pretty astonishing how perfect this platform is for Borderlands 4.”
While acknowledging that the Switch 2 may not possess the raw processing power of its competitors like the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, Pitchford nevertheless commended the console. He described the Switch 2 as “very powerful” and “an incredible machine in a very tight form factor.” Despite these positive remarks, details regarding potential performance or graphical differences between the various Borderlands 4 versions remain to be fully disclosed.
Commenting on the development process for the Switch 2, Pitchford shared a positive experience, indicating a harmonious relationship with the hardware:
“We don`t feel like we`re fighting the system. We feel like the system is enabling us and empowering us to make the best version of Borderlands 4 we can.”
Borderlands 4 will be priced at $70 for its standard edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Gearbox also plans to release several premium editions, with prices extending up to $150, offering additional content and exclusive bonuses for dedicated fans.
