Borderlands 4’s Elusive Bobbleheads: A True Collector’s Challenge

In the highly anticipated game Borderlands 4, much like other open-world titles, players will embark on a quest for numerous collectibles. However, this time the challenge is heightened, as the collectible Marcus bobblehead replicas—representing the refund-averse arms dealer—are cleverly hidden in the most hard-to-reach corners of the game world.

Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, explained that the concept for these collectibles emerged from the studio`s desire to fully leverage the game`s enhanced movement mechanics. Borderlands 4 introduces new traversal options, including gliding, double-jumping, and the use of a grapple-hook. The developers aimed to reward players who ventured into remote map locations with a unique souvenir.

“Graeme Timmons, Borderlands 4`s creative director, along with our designers, artists, and engineers, concluded that players needed something to discover when they reached these remote or uninhabited areas,” Pitchford stated. “We required an iconic symbol. Something consistent across all spots so players would immediately recognize what they had found. The item had to be simple, easily identifiable, inspire collection, and ideally, possess a strong connection to our game universe.”

The Marcus bobblehead was chosen for this role. Furthermore, their presence on the isolationist planet of Kairos is explained through in-game lore. Pitchford noted that there are “well over 200” of these bobbleheads to collect, and he anticipates that most players will never find them all. “A very, very small number of people will explore Kairos so completely that they might discover them all. Each has its own story,” Pitchford added, simultaneously challenging players by showcasing a map with these item locations.

As Borderlands 4`s September 12 release date draws nearer, Gearbox has been actively showcasing new game features. A recent trailer highlighted the new Siren Vex and her spooky abilities in action. The game is also expected to bring other improvements to the looter-shooter gameplay, including a much-anticipated volume slider for Claptrap.
