Battlefield 6: New Cross-Play and Matchmaking Details Revealed

The recent reveal of Battlefield 6 introduced several significant changes, notably a refined approach to cross-play. The game will implement a `preferred input` matchmaking system. This means console players using controllers will primarily be paired with other controller users, while PC players using mouse and keyboard will be grouped separately. Cross-platform play between these differing input methods will only be activated when necessary to fill game lobbies, ensuring faster matchmaking while minimizing the competitive advantage one input type might have over another.

Producer Alexia Christofi confirmed that the game prioritizes keeping players within their chosen input communities. However, if regional player numbers are insufficient for stable matchmaking, the system will broaden to include players from different platforms. This strategy aims to enhance match fairness, reduce lag, and accelerate game setup times. Players will also retain the option to fully enable or disable cross-play in the settings for greater control over their experience.

In contrast to Battlefield 2042, where console and PC cross-play was enabled by default and often led to imbalanced and inconsistent matches, Battlefield 6 treats cross-play as a secondary option, not the primary matchmaking method.

EA is also tackling the topic of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM), a frequently debated feature in contemporary shooters. For Battlefield 6, EA (as reported by CharlieIntel) indicates that matchmaking will primarily prioritize low ping for server proximity. Player skill will influence matchmaking to different extents, based on the specific game mode and player count, though comprehensive details are yet to be released.

The game will also feature the hallmark elements of the series, such as expansive battles, class-based squad combat, vehicle warfare, and dynamic environmental destruction.

Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10, 2025, across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with an open beta scheduled to commence on August 9.
