A common mechanic in extraction shooters is the periodic `wipe,` which resets all players` in-game progression. Embark Studios, the developer behind Arc Raiders, acknowledges the controversial nature of this system. To ensure fairness, the studio plans to implement wipes as an optional feature via its `Expedition Projects.`
Upon reaching level 20, players will unlock an Expedition Project. Each Expedition cycle spans approximately eight weeks, during which players contribute to collective progress. Once an Expedition concludes, players can choose to reset their progress, relinquishing all accumulated levels, skills, and inventory, while their cosmetic items and achievements remain intact. Players who opt not to complete an Expedition can transfer their existing progress to the subsequent cycle.
This approach is intended to maintain balance across the player base. Casual players, with less time to dedicate to Arc Raiders, won`t face the frustration of losing all their hard-earned progress. Conversely, dedicated players will be rewarded with exclusive cosmetic items, permanent account unlocks, and temporary buffs that will apply for the duration of the subsequent Expedition cycle.
Design director Virgil emphasized that these benefits will not confer any power or combat advantages over players who choose not to reset their progress. The primary incentive is prestige, showcased through the unique cosmetics earned. Virgil stated, “While it`s not a magical solution and won`t achieve the complete fresh start of a mandatory global reset, it aims to be more equitable for all players. We strive to value your in-game time as much as you do, whenever possible.”
Arc Raiders is set to launch on October 30 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Prior to its official release, Embark Studios will host a `Server Slam Open Test` from October 17-19 across PC and console platforms. Although progress from this test will not carry over to the main game, participation will grant players an exclusive backpack cosmetic for use in the full release.
