Ralph Ineson, famously known for portraying the pirate Charles Vane in Assassin`s Creed IV: Black Flag, has voiced his strong disapproval regarding reports of Ubisoft`s cancellation of an Assassin`s Creed title purportedly set during the American Civil War era.
Taking to social media, Ineson succinctly conveyed his sentiment with the emphatic phrase, “Once again, f**k off.”
A recent report by Game File indicated that the proposed historical backdrop for the game—the turbulent period of the American Civil War and Reconstruction in the 1860s and 1870s—was ultimately deemed excessively controversial. The project was reportedly halted in its early development stages. The concept involved players assuming the role of a Black protagonist who, after escaping enslavement, forged a new life away from the Southern states. This character would later be recruited by the Assassins, leading them back to the South to confront notorious racist organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan.
This wouldn`t have marked the first Assassin`s Creed game situated in North America. For instance, Assassin`s Creed III immersed players in the American Revolution, with settings in 18th-century Boston, New York City, and the vast American frontier. Interestingly, Assassin`s Creed III itself sparked some debate, particularly concerning its post-launch DLC pack, “The Tyranny of King Washington,” which presented an alternate reality where George Washington crowned himself king.
Ineson is a highly respected English actor with an impressive resume exceeding 150 credits. Most recently, he lent his voice to Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. His distinguished career also includes memorable roles in acclaimed productions like The Office, Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, The Witch, The Green Knight, and The Creator. In the realm of video games, Ineson`s voice can be recognized in titles such as Black Flag, Diablo IV, and Final Fantasy XVI.
In related news, a remake of Black Flag is reportedly in development, with an anticipated release date in 2026.
