The reimagined 8BitDo N64 wireless controller is set to launch next Wednesday, July 30th. The manufacturer confirmed this release date to GameSpot. Initially unveiled last October alongside the Analogue 3D, the release of the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller, much like the Analogue 3D console, has been delayed twice.
Despite being designed with the Analogue 3D in mind, the controller offers broad compatibility, supporting PC, Nintendo Switch, and Android devices. For subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, this new gamepad provides an excellent way to experience classic N64 games. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is available for preorder at $40 in either white or black.
8BitDo is currently addressing compatibility with the new Switch 2 console. Several of their controllers have already received firmware updates for Switch 2 support, which launched in June. Given that 8BitDo`s latest Switch controllers—including the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth, All-Button Arcade, and the upcoming Pro 3 Bluetooth—are compatible with Switch 2, it would be surprising if the 64 Controller does not work with Nintendo`s new console.
Features of the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller:
The 8BitDo 64 is a wireless Bluetooth gamepad that incorporates all the necessary buttons for N64 games, but reconfigures them into a modern form factor reminiscent of the 8BitDo Ultimate Controller series. Key design changes include:
- Joystick: The joystick is now positioned on the left side of the controller. It features Hall Effect sensors and a metal ring, promising smooth, precise input and eliminating the risk of stick drift while enhancing durability.
- N64 Stick Recreation: 8BitDo has replicated the N64 control stick`s original surface with three circular ridges but wisely replaced the hard plastic cap with a rubberized one for improved comfort. The octagonal stick gate, designed by Nintendo to mimic an eight-way D-pad, is also included.
- D-Pad: The actual D-pad has been relocated but remains in a recessed pocket.
- Buttons: The large A/B buttons and four C buttons retain the original N64 layout, size, and shape. Shoulder buttons (R and L) and triggers have been redesigned to meet modern expectations. Both top triggers now function as Z buttons, a departure from the original N64`s single Z button located on the back of the middle prong. The dual triggers prove useful for games outside the N64 library.
- Additional Buttons: The prominent Start button returns, joined by three familiar buttons from other 8BitDo Switch controllers: Minus (Select), 8BitDo (Home), and Turbo. The Turbo function allows for repeated button presses by simply holding it down.
- Customization: Full control remapping and other adjustments are possible via the 8BitDo Ultimate Software (desktop or mobile app). The controller supports two input modes: S-Input (Switch) and D-Input. While it has built-in rumble motors, vibration functionality is limited to Analogue 3D and Switch.
The black edition of the 8BitDo 64 launches on the same day, though Amazon`s current estimates suggest a longer shipping wait for this color, which might be due to conservative delivery projections.
Other Upcoming 8BitDo Releases:
Beyond the N64 controller, 8BitDo is also launching the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad on August 12th, priced at $70. This highly customizable, retro-inspired wireless controller boasts compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PC, Apple devices, and Android.
What is the Analogue 3D?
The Analogue 3D is the next FPGA console from the premium retro hardware manufacturer. Unfortunately, preorders for this $250 console sold out last October. Enthusiasts should monitor for potential restocks after its launch in late August. The console enables playback of original N64 game cartridges with hardware-accurate emulation and 100% compatibility, supporting up to 4K resolution. It features four controller ports for original Nintendo 64 three-prong controllers or third-party wired controllers. The console does not include a controller, so users will need to acquire an 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller or another compatible gamepad separately. Pre-owned N64 controllers are available at GameStop, and various clones of the original controller can be found affordably on Amazon.
